Bats, Beasts, and Broomsticks: A Baroque All-Hallows-Eve Concert

imgJoin us for an entertaining and spooktacular performance from violinist Janelle Davis, Baroque oboist Sung Lee, and harpsichordist Steve Hilton as they play scary Baroque and Renaissance music of the season on period instruments by composers Bach, Telemann, Rameau, and friends. Learn about the European world 250-500 years ago through composers' music about monsters, witches, devils, cemeteries and more. We look forward to sharing this unique and entertaining performance together! Costumes are encouraged if you care to dress for the theme...but not required.

img About our Musicians Janelle Davis  performs with ensembles both near and far from her home in Charlotte, including Mountainside Baroque, Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, Bach Collegium Fort Wayne, Carolina Pro Musica, Mallarmé Chamber Players, Raleigh Camerata, and the North Carolina Baroque Orchestra. Internationally, she has given concerts in China, Europe, and the U.K. Janelle has been heard in programs for NPR, PBS television, and live on Chicago's WFMT classical radio. She holds a Doctor of Music degree in Early Music from Indiana University where she studied with Stanley Ritchie, specializing in music from the 17th and 18th centuries.

imgAt the age of 14, Sung Lee discovered the sound of the oboe while listening to a recording of Tchaikovsky's violin concerto. His passion for oboe and music has continued to grow ever since.

Sung holds a Master of Music degree in historical oboes from Indiana University, where his teacher, Washington McClain, inspired him in all things life and music. For the past two decades, Sung has been sharing his talent and love for baroque music and beyond as a performer on oboe, flute, recorder, and shawm.  As principal oboist he can be heard on the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra recordings on the Naxos label directed by Barthold Kuijken -- 'The Lully Effect', 'The Versaille Revolution', and 'The Colorful Telemann'.

imgHaving had a chance encounter with his first clavichord in college, Steve Hilton instantly recognized the nuanced elegance of Baroque music on period instruments. Today, Steve is a professional harpsichordist living in Charlotte where he plays with the CP Baroque Ensemble and participates in performances with other exceptional instrumentalists from the North Carolina Baroque Orchestra. Steve has degrees from the University of Chicago and Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. And in his spare time, Steve runs a small software company, works on cars, and spends time with his family.
