Coming Monday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Lodge
The Land before SCCL
Presented by SCCL resident and researcher Jim House
Like many of us who moved to SCCL, Jim House wondered what's up with those "Do Not Enter" and black fenceposts protecting patches of property between our houses. He was fascinated with the unwritten history locked in the ground in and around SCCL and is eager to share stories of what the land looked like and who lived here before us.
Efforts in the 1970s by the Duke Power Company and the University of South Carolina to identify, protect, study and preserve the fragile historic and archaeological history of our area have been stymied by rapid growth. Unfortunately archaeological resources in York and Lancaster counties became increasingly threatened and many important sites were destroyed by development.
Over the past 20 years, two additional long-term projects have focused on the historic Catawba archaeological record. Our presenter will share what he has learned so far about the history and past of the land we now know as Sun City Carolina Lakes.
About our presenter I grew up in Ohio and have a BA from the University of Toledo in Business. I started my own software development business dealing primary in cleaning up Super Fund Sites. I am an avid cyclist, enjoy hiking, and am a member of 21 clubs in Sun City. I've led 5 hikes here in Sun City, exploring the Common Open Spaces.
