Volunteer Opportunities for SCCL residents

AREA VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCCL RESIDENTS
Lifelong Learning Club is often contacted by area groups hoping to use some of our resident talent. We will post such requests in this section of our web site. To refer opportunities to our members, please send your information to LLL to [email protected].

¤ CULTURE & HISTORY MUSEUMS of York County
The four locations now managed by CHM (Historic Brattonsville, Main Street Children's Museum, McCelvey Center, Museum of York County) would love get volunteers to help with their living history events, archives and research, gardening and landscaping, collections, exhibits and more. To volunteer at any Culture & Heritage site, contact Windy Cole at 803-9097218. To learn more about volunteer opportunities at Historic Brattonsville, contact Emmy Gillespie at 803-620-2094.
imgAt our LLL program on September 25, Windy Cole (standing) and Emmy Gillespie reunited with SCCL residents Ray and Elly Weiss. The couple has a long history of volunteer work at Historic Brattonsville with Windy.

¤ WINTHROP UNIVERSITY committee work

Winthrop is currently seeking a volunteer to serve on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC.) The IACUC reviews and approves proposed activities involving animals in research, testing, or teaching. The IACUC is comprised of 5 committee members, including a veterinarian and a non-affiliated, or "community" representative. The non-affiliated member provides representation for general community interests in the proper care and treatment of animals. The nonaffiliated member often brings a broader perspective that is not complicated by the institutional mission. The nonaffiliated member is particularly well positioned to ask basic questions, such as those regarding the importance of proposed projects using animals and whether the results of the research are likely to make an important impact. Non-affiliated members are voting IACUC members with all the same rights, responsibilities, and charges as the other members.

This is a low time commitment. There is a short online training at the start that is self-paced but often takes 2-3 hours. The IACUC meets twice a year - once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester. The meeting lasts about an hour and is being held via Zoom. There is also the option to volunteer to come to campus twice a year to take part in a lab inspection (fish).

If you are interested in volunteering to serve as the nonaffiliated member on Winthrop's IACUC or would like further information, please contact Michele Smith, Recording Secretary to the IACUC, at s[email protected].
